Energy Saving Tips

Laundry- august

Provided by Project Energy Savers, LLC

WASH LAUNDRY IN COLD WATER INSTEAD OF HOT.

Hot water only needs to be used for very dirty loads.

WASH AND DRY ONLY FULL LOADS.  The machine uses about the same amount of water whether you wash a full load or just one item.

CLEAN THE LINT FILTER AFTER EVERY LOAD.  Clogged filter drive up drying costs.

CHECK YOUR OUTSIDE DRYER EXHAUST VENT.  Make sure it opens and closes freely.  If it doesn't close tightly, outside air is getting into your house through the dryer and you will need to replace the exhaust vent.

DRY CLOTHES OUTSIDE IN GOOD WEATHER.  Sunlight is free.

USE THE MOISTURE SENSOR FEATURE ON YOUR DRYER (if there is one).  This way, you won't over-dry your clothes.

BUY ENERGY STAR WASHERS.  Qualified washers use about half the water and electricity of standard washers.

No Cost Energy Conservation Actions:

o       Turn down your thermostat 5 degrees.  Each degree saves 2% on your heating bill.

o       Keep furniture, drapes and other objects from blocking heating registers, radiators, and return vents.

o       Put on a sweater instead of turning the thermostat up.

o       Turn your water heater down to 120°.

o       Use the smallest pans possible when cooking and use lids.

o       Clean the lint filter after every load of clothes you dry.  Dry clothes outside in good weather.

 Low Cost Energy Conservation Actions:

o       Install a programmable thermostat with the money you’ve saved by turning your thermostat to a lower setting.  Programmable thermostats can make adjustments to indoor temperature when no one is home and/or everyone is sleeping.

o       Change your furnace filter on a regular basis.

o       Install weather-strip and/or caulk around drafty doors and windows.

o       Switch from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs in the areas/ fixtures you use most often.
